No, you cannot use just any air filter on your air conditioner. Your air conditioner has specific size and efficiency requirements that must be met for it to work properly. Using the wrong size or type of filter can reduce its efficiency and even damage the unit. Check your owner’s manual or ask a professional before purchasing an air filter for your air conditioner.

The SEER  stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is the standard measure of the energy efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps.

The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit is in converting electricity into cooling power. A higher SEER rating also means lower operating costs because the system will use less electricity to cool your home. All air conditioners and heat pumps sold in the United States must have a SEER rating of at least 13, but many newer models boast ratings of 20 or more.

When sizing an air conditioning unit, the first step is calculating the cooling load. The cooling load measures how much heat the unit has to remove from the space to maintain a comfortable temperature. Many factors impact the cooling load, including the size of the room, the walls and windows’ insulation, and the amount of heat-generating equipment such as lights and computers. It’s best to seek help from a licensed HVAC contractor regarding A/C sizing.
