It’s the first really brutal stretch of August, and the extra cooling gear comes out — a box fan in the bedroom, a portable AC in the sunroom, a mini-fridge in the garage, maybe a dehumidifier running in the basement. More often than not, all of it ends up plugged into the same power strip snaking out from behind a dresser. It’s one of the quiet setups we notice on summer service calls across the Oklahoma City metro, and it’s worth a closer look, because a power strip is one of those everyday objects that’s either perfectly safe or genuinely dangerous depending entirely on how you use it.

Here’s how to tell which side of that line you’re on.

What a Power Strip Actually Does

A power strip does exactly one thing: it takes a single wall outlet and splits it into several. What it does not do is create more electrical capacity. The circuit feeding that outlet is still protected by one breaker — usually 15 or 20 amps — and everything plugged into the strip has to share that same limited budget. Plug in six things and you haven’t added power; you’ve just divided the same amount of power six ways and made it very easy to ask for more than the circuit can give.

That’s the core of every power-strip problem. The strip itself is rarely the villain. The trouble starts when the load plugged into it adds up to more than the wiring behind the wall was built to carry.

The Loads That Get People in Trouble

Most electronics are featherweights, electrically speaking. A lamp, a phone charger, a TV, a laptop, a router, a gaming console — you can run a whole entertainment center off one strip without coming close to its limit. Those are exactly what power strips are made for.

The danger is heat and motors. Anything that makes heat or drives a large motor pulls heavy, sustained current, and that’s what overheats a strip’s relatively thin internal wiring and pushes the circuit toward its breaker limit. Keep these off power strips entirely:

  • Space heaters — the single worst offender, though more of a winter problem
  • Portable and window air conditioners
  • Microwaves, toaster ovens, air fryers, and coffee makers
  • Hair dryers, curling irons, and space-heating “personal” units
  • Refrigerators and freezers, including the garage beer fridge

Every one of these belongs in a wall outlet of its own. The bigger ones — a portable AC or a second fridge — really want a dedicated circuit so they aren’t fighting the rest of the room for amperage. Never Daisy-Chain Strips

If you take one thing away, make it this: never plug a power strip into another power strip. It feels harmless — you needed one more outlet, so you chained a second strip — but “daisy-chaining” defeats the whole safety design. Each strip is rated for the single outlet it plugs into. String two or three together and you invite everyone to pull power through a chain of thin cords and small connections that were never meant to carry that much current at once. It’s a leading cause of overloaded circuits and overheated cords, and it violates most electrical and fire codes for exactly that reason.

The same logic applies to running a power strip off an extension cord, or feeding a heavy appliance through a lightweight cord. If you find yourself building these chains, the outlet isn’t the problem to solve around — the shortage of outlets is the problem to fix.

Power Strip vs. Surge Protector — They’re Not the Same

They look nearly identical, which trips a lot of people up. A plain power strip just multiplies outlets and offers no protection against voltage spikes. A surge protector contains components (usually metal-oxide varistors) that clamp down on the sudden voltage spikes that ride in on the line during a storm or when the grid switches loads — a real consideration during Oklahoma’s storm-heavy months.

For anything with a circuit board you’d hate to lose — a TV, a computer, a game console — use a surge protector, not a bare strip. And know that surge protectors wear out: the protective components degrade with every hit, so a unit that’s absorbed years of spikes may still power your gear while no longer protecting it. Many have a status light that tells you when protection is gone. For coverage that protects your whole home — including hardwired items a strip can’t reach, like your HVAC and appliances — a surge device installed at the panel is the more complete answer.

Warning Signs to Act On

A power strip should feel and look completely unremarkable. Pay attention if you notice any of these:

  • The strip or its cord is warm to the touch during use
  • Any discoloration, scorching, or a faint burnt-plastic smell
  • The breaker feeding that outlet trips when everything’s running
  • The strip is buried under a rug or behind furniture where heat can’t escape
  • Cords are pinched, cracked, or run under a doorway where they get crushed

Warmth and any burnt smell mean stop using it now — that’s heat building at a connection, and heat behind the wall is how electrical fires start. A breaker that trips when the strip is loaded is the circuit telling you the honest truth: you’re asking for more than it can safely provide.

Power strips are perfectly safe for what they’re designed to do — running lamps, chargers, and low-draw electronics off a single outlet. They become a hazard when they’re asked to power heat- and motor-driven appliances, when they’re chained together, or when they’re buried where heat can build.
