Do I Need a Special Circuit for a Hot Tub or Spa?

Late summer is when the backyard hot tub calls start coming in. Someone finds a good end-of-season deal, gets it delivered, sets it on the pad — and then realizes the last step isn’t “fill it and plug it in.” A hot tub combines a lot of water with a lot of electrical current, and the wiring that connects the two is one of the most safety-critical installs in a home. A question we hear all the time this time of year is some version of: can’t I just run it off the outlet on the patio?
For most tubs, the answer is no. Here’s what a hot tub circuit actually involves and why it’s worth getting right.
Most Hot Tubs Need a Dedicated 240-Volt Circuit
The outlet on your patio is a general-purpose 120-volt circuit, and it’s almost certainly shared with other outlets, lights, or the garage. A full-size hot tub is one of the heaviest single loads in a residential home — the heater and pumps together can pull as much current as an electric range. Running that off a shared 120-volt circuit would trip the breaker constantly at best, and overheat the wiring at worst.
That’s why most spas require a dedicated 240-volt circuit: a home run of the correct wire size, straight from your electrical panel to the tub, feeding nothing else. “Dedicated” is the key word. Nothing else shares it, so the tub always has the full circuit to itself.
The circuit size depends on the model — many hot tubs call for a 50-amp circuit, some smaller ones 30 or 40 amps, and larger swim spas can need more. The manufacturer’s manual lists the exact amperage and wire gauge, and that spec drives everything else about the install.
The GFCI Disconnect Is Not Optional
Here’s the piece homeowners rarely know about until an electrician explains it: your hot tub needs a GFCI disconnect — a small weatherproof box, mounted near the tub, that both cuts power and provides ground-fault protection.
A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) constantly compares the current going out to the current coming back. If even a tiny amount is leaking — say, through water, or through a person — it shuts the circuit off in a fraction of a second. Around a tub full of water, that’s the safety layer that matters most.
Code requires this disconnect to be:
- Within sight of the spa, so anyone servicing it can confirm the power is off.
- At least 5 feet away from the water’s edge, so it can’t be reached from inside the tub.
- Readily accessible and lockable, so power can be safely cut for maintenance.
This isn’t a formality. It’s the difference between a stray fault becoming a harmless click and becoming a dangerous shock in standing water.
Bonding: The Safety Step You Can’t See
Beyond the circuit and the GFCI, hot tub installs require bonding — tying the metal parts in and around the tub (pump housings, heater, metal frame, and often the surrounding rebar or a metal deck) together with a heavy copper wire.
The point of bonding is to make sure everything a person might touch sits at the same electrical potential. If a fault ever energizes one component, bonding keeps everything else at that same level so there’s no voltage difference to push current through a body. It’s invisible once the tub is set, which is exactly why it gets skipped on DIY jobs — and why an inspector looks for it specifically.
”Plug-and-Play” Spas Are the Exception, With a Catch
Some smaller, lower-powered spas are sold as “plug-and-play” and are designed to run on a standard 120-volt outlet with a GFCI built into the cord. If that’s your model, you’ve dodged the 240-volt install — but not the electrical work.
Even a plug-and-play spa should be on its own circuit that isn’t shared with the rest of the patio, garage, or kitchen. Plug it into a shared outlet and you’ll likely trip the breaker every time the heater and a pump run together, and a spa that keeps losing power can’t hold temperature or filter properly. In many cases the cleanest fix is still a new dedicated 120-volt outlet run for the tub alone.
