How Cold Should the Air From My AC Vents Be?

The number that matters: the temperature split
Your AC doesn’t cool your house to a fixed vent temperature. It removes a certain amount of heat from whatever air passes over the indoor coil. Technicians call the result the temperature split (or “delta T”): the difference between the warm return air being pulled in and the cool supply air being pushed back out.
For a healthy central system, that drop lands in the range of about 14 to 20 degrees. So if the air returning to your system is 78 degrees, you’d expect the air leaving a nearby supply vent to be somewhere around 58 to 64. Notice what that means in practice: the raw vent number moves with the weather, but the split should stay fairly steady. A system holding an 18-degree split when it’s 95 out is the same healthy system holding an 18-degree split when it’s 108 out — the vent air just feels different because the starting point changed.
How to check it yourself in five minutes
You don’t need special tools. A basic kitchen or meat thermometer works fine.
- Let the AC run for at least 15 minutes so temperatures stabilize. Checking right after it kicks on gives a misleading reading.
- Measure a supply vent. Pick a vent as close as you can to the indoor air handler or furnace — the air has warmed slightly by the time it reaches far-off rooms. Hold the thermometer in the airflow and wait for the number to settle.
- Measure the return. Do the same at the large return grille where the system pulls air in.
- Subtract. Return temperature minus supply temperature is your split.
If you land in the mid-teens to low twenties, your system is moving heat the way it should. If the gap is noticeably smaller — say under about 12 degrees — your AC isn’t pulling enough heat out of the air, and that’s worth understanding.
What a weak split is telling you
A shrinking temperature split is one of the earliest, most honest warning signs an air conditioner gives. A few of the usual culprits:
- Low refrigerant from a leak. This is the classic cause of a weak split. Refrigerant is what absorbs the heat, and when the charge drops, the system simply can’t cool the air as much. Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up,” so a low charge always means a leak that needs to be found — not just topped off.
- A dirty evaporator coil. Over years of running, the indoor coil collects a film of grime that insulates it from the very air it’s supposed to cool. A caked coil quietly chokes performance.
- A clogged filter or airflow problem. Restricted airflow keeps the system from delivering its cooling to the house. Ironically, too little airflow can also widen the split while the house still won’t cool, because the small amount of air that gets through gets very cold — sometimes cold enough to start freezing the coil.
- A struggling compressor. As the heart of the system ages, it can lose the capacity to move refrigerant efficiently, and the split narrows.
The filter is the one piece of this you can rule out yourself — pull it, and if it’s gray and matted, replace it and re-check the split the next day. The rest live inside a sealed, high-voltage system and call for a technician with gauges. Handling refrigerant in particular requires EPA certification and isn’t a DIY job.
