Why these panels are different

Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels with Stab-Lok breakers became infamous because independent testing found their breakers can fail to trip when they should. None of these are being manufactured today, and replacement parts are scarce or unreliable, which is another reason electricians steer homeowners toward a full panel replacement rather than patching.
How to check what you have
You don’t have to touch anything live to identify your panel. Open only the outer door — the one that swings open to reveal the row of breaker switches — and read the label, usually printed inside the door or on the panel face. Look for the manufacturer name (Federal Pacific, FPE, Zinsco, GTE-Sylvania) and any “Stab-Lok” marking on the breakers.
Do not remove the inner cover — the flat metal panel held on by screws. Behind it are the live bus bars and main lugs, which carry lethal voltage even with the main breaker off. Identifying the brand from the outer label is all you need to do yourself; leave everything behind that cover to a licensed electrician.
