When a pipe lets go or a storm knocks something loose, the worst time to learn where your main water, gas, and electrical shut-offs are is while water is already spreading. Here's how to find every one before you need it.

Water: The One That Causes the Most Damage

The main gas shut-off is a valve at your meter, almost always outside. When the tab on the valve runs in line with the pipe, gas is flowing; a quarter turn with a wrench so it sits crosswise shuts it off. Keep a wrench nearby, or know exactly where one is.

The critical part is the order of operations. If you smell that rotten-egg odor or hear hissing, get everyone out of the house first, don’t flip any switches or use a phone inside, and make the calls from outside. Shut the gas at the meter only if you can do it safely on your way out. And never turn the gas back on yourself afterward — relighting appliances and confirming there’s no leak is work for the gas utility or a licensed professional.

Electrical: Find the Main Breaker

Open your electrical panel and look at the top: the largest breaker, usually labeled “main,” cuts power to the entire house. Everything below it controls individual circuits. Knowing which is which turns a scary situation into a manageable one.

You won’t touch the main often, and you shouldn’t cycle it casually. Reach for it when there’s a genuine hazard — water rising toward the panel or an outlet, a burning smell you’ve traced to the electrical system, or a situation where you need everything de-energized fast.
