- You’re powering a detached garage, shop, or shed. Running one feeder out to the building and landing it in a subpanel is far more practical than pulling separate circuits for lights, outlets, and equipment.

- The loads are far from the main panel. The farther electricity travels on a small wire, the more voltage it loses. A subpanel closer to the load lets you make short branch runs off a single heavier feeder.
In Oklahoma’s climate, that mini-split or window-unit circuit is frequently the trigger. Cooling a garage or an over-garage room in August takes a real electrical load, and if the nearest panel is on the far side of the house and full, a subpanel out where the cooling is going to live makes the whole project simpler.
Subpanel vs. Upgrading the Main Panel

A subpanel adds breaker spaces — physical room for more circuits. What it does not do is add total electrical capacity to your home. It’s still fed by, and limited by, your main panel and your service size. If your main panel is a modern 200-amp panel that simply ran out of open slots, a subpanel is usually the right, cost-effective move.
But if the real problem is that your whole home is pushing the limit of its service — an older 100-amp panel already working hard to run central AC, an electric range, and a water heater — then bolting a subpanel onto it won’t create capacity that isn’t there. That’s a case for upgrading the main electrical panel and service instead, so the entire home has the headroom it needs. An electrician settles this with a load calculation before recommending either path. Adding a big new load to a service that’s already maxed out is how you end up with a panel that runs hot and breakers that nuisance-trip on the hottest afternoons.
Why This Isn’t a DIY Job
Subpanels have a few requirements that trip up even handy homeowners. The feeder has to be sized correctly for the subpanel’s load and the distance it travels. The grounds and neutrals must be kept separate in a subpanel — bonded together only at the main panel — or the whole system’s safety grounding is compromised. A detached-building subpanel needs its own grounding electrode. Get any of that wrong and you’ve built a hazard that looks like it’s working fine right up until it isn’t.
It’s also permitted, inspected work. A licensed electrician runs the load calculation, sizes the feeder and breaker, installs the subpanel with correct grounding and bonding, and pulls the permit so the work is inspected and on record.
