What Is an AC Capacitor — and Why Does It Fail in the Heat?

What a Capacitor Actually Does

Your outdoor AC unit has motors that need a strong jolt of electricity to get spinning — far more than what it takes to keep them running. The capacitor is the part that stores and delivers that jolt. Think of it like the battery on a nail gun: it holds a charge and releases it in a burst on demand.

Most residential systems have a dual-run capacitor, a single component that serves two jobs at once:

  • It gives the compressor (the heart of the system) the push it needs to start and keep cycling.
  • It does the same for the outdoor fan motor that blows heat off the coil.

Some systems also use a separate start capacitor that provides an extra kick at the moment of startup. Either way, when the capacitor weakens, the motors it feeds struggle — and eventually stop.

Why Summer Heat Is So Hard on Capacitors

Capacitors are heat-sensitive by design, and Oklahoma summers push them past their limits in a few ways:

  • Ambient heat. The capacitor lives inside the outdoor unit, sitting in direct sun and radiant heat off the concrete pad. On a 100-plus-degree day, internal temperatures climb well above that. Heat degrades the capacitor’s internal materials and shortens its life.
  • Longer runtimes. During a heat wave, your system barely shuts off. More runtime means more charge-and-discharge cycles, and every cycle adds wear.
  • Hard starts. The hotter it gets, the harder the compressor has to work to start against high system pressure. A capacitor that was marginal in spring can’t deliver enough punch when the load peaks.

Warning Signs Your Capacitor Is Failing

A dying capacitor usually gives you a few clues before it quits entirely:

  • A humming or buzzing outdoor unit that won’t start. The motor is getting power but can’t get moving without the capacitor’s boost. This is the classic symptom.
  • The fan won’t spin on its own. In some cases, the fan will start turning if you give the blade a push with a stick (with the power OFF). That “push start” is a strong sign the capacitor is too weak to do its job — but it’s a diagnosis clue, not a fix.
  • AC shutting off randomly or short-cycling. A struggling capacitor can cause the system to trip on safety limits and cut out before the house cools.
  • Warm air from the vents. If the compressor can’t start, the system runs but produces no cooling.
  • A clicking sound at startup. You may hear the unit try to start, click, and fail repeatedly.

Can You Replace a Capacitor Yourself?

A capacitor stores a powerful electrical charge even after the power is shut off — enough to deliver a serious, potentially dangerous shock if it’s handled without being safely discharged first. It has to be drained properly before it’s touched.

There’s also a sizing issue: capacitors are rated in specific microfarad (µF) and voltage values, and installing the wrong rating can burn out the very motor it’s supposed to protect — turning an inexpensive fix into a compressor replacement. A trained tech tests the failed part, confirms the correct rating, and checks whether something else (a failing motor drawing too much current, for example) caused the capacitor to fail in the first place. Swapping the part without asking why it died often just leads to another failure weeks later.

How long do AC capacitors last? Typically somewhere in the range of several years, but Oklahoma’s heat and long cooling seasons tend to shorten that. Many capacitors that fail here are only partway through their expected life — heat is the accelerator.
