They assume the air conditioner is failing. Usually it’s fine — the real problem is humidity, and that’s a different fight than temperature.

Oklahoma summers throw a lot of moisture at your home. When the air inside carries too much of it, your house feels warmer than it is, your AC works harder for less comfort, and you set the stage for mold, dust mites, and that heavy, close feeling that no amount of turning the thermostat down seems to fix. The Number You’re Looking For

Set it somewhere central, away from vents, bathrooms, and exterior doors, and watch it for a few days.

You’ll learn a lot fast. If it reads 45 percent and holds steady, you’re in great shape and your AC is doing its job. If it’s parked at 58 percent on a muggy afternoon, or it spikes every time someone showers and never recovers, that tells you where to look next.

Why Your House Gets Too Humid in the First Place

Your air conditioner is also your dehumidifier — as warm indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses out and drains away. That’s why the AC is the biggest lever you have over summer humidity. When a home stays muggy despite running, one of a few things is usually going on:

  • The AC short-cycles. An oversized system cools the air fast and shuts off before it runs long enough to wring out much moisture. It hits the temperature but never dries the air.
  • The system is low on refrigerant or has a dirty coil. Both hurt the coil’s ability to condense moisture. This is also worth ruling out if the house is humid and not cooling well.
  • Humid outdoor air is sneaking in. Gaps around doors, windows, and leaky ductwork in a hot attic constantly feed moist air back into the house, so the AC never gets ahead of it.
  • Everyday moisture adds up. Showers, cooking, laundry, and even houseplants dump water into the air. Without exhaust fans venting it outside, it lingers.

How to Bring It Down

The good news is that most of the fixes are things you can do this weekend:

  • Run bath and kitchen exhaust fans — and let them run 15 to 20 minutes after a shower or a big pot of pasta. Venting that moisture straight outside keeps it from spreading through the house.
  • Set the fan to AUTO, not ON. When the blower runs constantly, moisture that just condensed on the coil gets blown back into the house before it can drain. On AUTO, the fan stops when the cooling does, and the water drains away.
  • Change your filter so the system moves air freely and the coil can do its job.
  • Seal the obvious leaks. Weatherstrip drafty doors and caulk gaps around windows so you’re not fighting a constant stream of humid outdoor air.
  • Skip the heavy moisture chores at peak heat. Air-dry laundry outside instead of on a rack indoors, and save long hot showers for when the exhaust fan can keep up.
