What Temperature Should I Set My Water Heater?

  • Energy use. A storage tank reheats and holds water around the clock whether you use it or not. The hotter you ask it to stay, the more it loses to the surrounding air and the harder it works to keep up. Backing a too-hot tank down to 120°F is one of the simplest ways to shave standby loss without buying anything.

For a typical family, 120°F is also just plain enough — enough for hot showers, clean dishes, and laundry, with a little reserve.

When a higher setting makes sense

There’s one real reason to consider going warmer: bacteria. Tank water heaters can harbor Legionella and similar bacteria when they sit in the lukewarm range for long stretches. That risk climbs if:

  • Someone in the home is elderly, immunocompromised, or has a chronic respiratory condition.
  • You have a large tank that rarely gets fully used, so water sits stagnant.
  • The heater serves a home that’s empty for long periods.

The right way to do it is to run the tank hot and install thermostatic anti-scald (mixing) valves so the water arriving at your faucets and showers is tempered back down to a safe delivery temperature. That’s a job worth having a plumber set up correctly rather than simply cranking the dial and hoping.

A summer note for households with kids

Summer is actually a good time to check your setting — incoming groundwater is warmer this time of year, so a tank set high can deliver water that feels even more aggressive at the tap. If little ones are using the bathrooms unsupervised, dialing a too-hot heater back to 120°F is a five-minute safety upgrade worth doing before someone gets a surprise.

How to actually change the temperature

The method depends on what kind of heater you have — and be aware the dial markings are notoriously vague.

Gas water heater: Look for a dial on the gas control valve near the bottom of the tank. Many are labeled only “Low – Hot – Very Hot” or A/B/C rather than actual degrees. Turn it in small increments, then measure.

Electric water heater: There are usually two thermostats hidden behind access panels — an upper and a lower. Turn off the breaker first, remove the panels and insulation, and adjust both thermostats to the same setting with a screwdriver. Never poke around an electric heater’s thermostats with the power on.

For either type, don’t trust the label. Run the hot water at the tap closest to the heater for a minute, then catch a stream in a cup and check it with a kitchen thermometer. Adjust, wait a couple of hours for the tank to stabilize, and measure again until you land near 120°F.

When to call a plumber instead

Adjusting a dial is DIY-friendly, but a few situations point to a real problem rather than a setting:

  • Water comes out scalding no matter how low you set the dial — a sign of a failed thermostat or stuck valve.
  • The heater can’t reach 120°F even set high, which often points to sediment buildup, a failing element, or an aging tank.
  • The temperature-and-pressure (T&P) relief valve is dripping or discharging — that’s a pressure/temperature safety signal, not something to ignore.
  • You want to run the tank hot for bacteria control and need mixing valves installed to keep delivery temperatures safe.
