A dedicated circuit is exactly what it sounds like: a single circuit that powers one appliance and nothing else. It runs from its own breaker in your panel, through its own wire, to a single outlet. No lamps sharing it, no phone chargers, no vacuum plugged in down the hall. Certain appliances need this because they pull heavy or constant current, and forcing them to share a circuit is how you end up with breakers that trip, outlets that run warm, and wiring that ages faster than it should.

A common call we get this time of year: a homeowner adds a chest freezer or a second fridge to the garage for summer, plugs a window AC into the same wall, and the breaker starts tripping every afternoon once both are running hard in the Oklahoma heat.   • EV chargers and hot tubs — high-draw additions that always require a purpose-built circuit.

Signs a Circuit Is Overloaded

You don’t always need to open the panel to tell a circuit is carrying too much. Watch for:

  • A breaker that trips when a specific appliance starts or when two things run together
  • The outlet or its cover plate feeling warm to the touch
  • Lights on the same circuit dimming when the appliance kicks on
  • A faint buzzing or the smell of hot plastic near an outlet or the panel
  • Needing a power strip to plug everything in around one appliance

Warm outlets and burning smells are not “wait and see” symptoms — cut power to that circuit and have it looked at. Heat at a connection is the early stage of an electrical fire.

What Adding a Dedicated Circuit Involves

Putting an appliance on its own circuit isn’t a plug swap. A licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire gauge to the appliance’s load, runs a new wire from the panel to a new outlet, and installs a breaker with an open slot to spare.
