Why Aren't My Outdoor Lights Working?

You flip the switch or wait for dusk, and nothing happens — the porch light stays dark, or the path lights that used to line the walkway have gone black. It’s the kind of problem that’s easy to ignore in the long days of summer, but come fall it’s suddenly dark by dinnertime, you’re leaning on those lights again, and their absence is hard to miss.

The good news is that a lot of outdoor-lighting failures have simple, findable causes. Here’s how to sort out what’s going on.

Start by Narrowing It Down

Before you chase wiring, figure out the pattern — it points straight at the cause:

  • One fixture is out, the rest work. The problem is at that fixture: a burned-out bulb, a corroded socket, or a bad connection. This is almost never a wiring emergency.
  • A whole run or zone is dark. Something upstream feeds all of them — a tripped outlet, a failed transformer, or a switch/timer that isn’t sending power.
  • Everything outdoor is dead. Look at the circuit itself: a tripped GFCI or breaker, or a switch that’s off.
  • They work sometimes, or won’t come on at the right time. That’s a controls problem — a photocell or timer that’s confused, dirty, or worn out.

Knowing which bucket you’re in saves you from testing things that were never the issue.

The Usual Culprits

A tripped GFCI outlet

Outdoor outlets — and the circuits that feed exterior lighting and low-voltage transformers — are required to be GFCI-protected, and that protection does its job by cutting power the instant it senses moisture or a fault. After a rain, a sprinkler cycle, or a bit of morning dew getting into a connection, a GFCI can trip and take your lights with it.

The catch is that the GFCI doing the tripping isn’t always where you’d expect. It might be the outlet behind the plants where the transformer plugs in, an outlet in the garage, or even one in a bathroom that happens to share the circuit. Walk your outdoor and garage outlets, press reset on any with a popped button, and see if the lights come back. If it trips again right away, stop — something is faulting, and that’s worth diagnosing rather than repeatedly resetting.

A photocell or timer that won’t switch

Most outdoor lighting turns on automatically, either with a photocell (a dusk-to-dawn eye) or a timer. Both fail in quiet ways:

  • A photocell caked with dirt, spider webs, or a splash of paint can misread the light level and simply never turn on — or the opposite, staying on all day.
  • A photocell aimed at a streetlight, a porch fixture, or your own landscape lights can “see” light that isn’t the sun and refuse to switch.
  • A timer that lost power in a storm or a brief outage often forgets its schedule and needs to be reset to the right time.

Clean the sensor, make sure nothing else is shining on it, and reset the timer. If it still won’t switch reliably, the control has likely worn out — they don’t last forever exposed to Oklahoma weather.

A failed low-voltage transformer

If you have landscape lighting — path lights, uplights, deck lights — they almost certainly run on 12 volts, stepped down from your household power by a transformer mounted near an outlet, often on an exterior wall or in the garage. When an entire landscape run goes dark, the transformer is a prime suspect.

Confirm it has power (is the outlet it’s plugged into live, and is any built-in GFCI or breaker on the transformer tripped?). Check that its own timer or photocell is calling for lights. A transformer that’s warm, humming loudly, scorched, or dead to the touch has likely failed or is overloaded — and that’s a replacement, sized correctly for the total wattage of your lights, best handled by a pro.

Damaged or corroded cable and connections

Low-voltage cable is often just buried an inch or two under mulch and soil, which makes it easy to nick with a shovel, an edger, or an aeration tool. A cut or crushed cable kills everything downstream of the break. Connectors are the other weak point: the quick-tap connectors used on landscape wire corrode over time, and a green, crusty connection loses contact and drops the fixture — or the whole run past it.

If a section works and everything beyond a certain point is dark, walk the cable to that transition and look for damage or a bad connector.

Simple bulb and fixture failure

Don’t overlook the obvious. Outdoor bulbs — especially older halogen landscape bulbs — burn out, and a single dead bulb explains a single dark fixture. Moisture works its way into sockets and fixtures over the years, corroding contacts. Swapping in a fresh bulb (and cleaning the socket) is the first thing to try on any one light that’s out while its neighbors are fine.

What You Can Safely Handle — and What You Can’t

Plenty of outdoor-lighting troubleshooting is fair game for a homeowner. Resetting a GFCI, cleaning a photocell, resetting a timer, swapping bulbs, and re-seating a corroded low-voltage connector are all reasonable to try yourself. The 12-volt side of landscape lighting is low-energy and forgiving.

Where you should stop is anywhere line voltage is involved — the 120-volt wiring feeding a transformer, a porch or floodlight fixture, an outdoor outlet, or the switch inside. Outdoor line-voltage connections are exposed to water, which makes a fault far more dangerous than the same mistake indoors. A GFCI that keeps tripping the moment you reset it, a transformer that’s hot or scorched, wiring that shows heat damage, or a circuit that’s dead with no obvious tripped breaker are all signs to bring in a licensed electrician rather than keep poking.
