- Look at the connections, not just the tube. The compression fittings at each end and the shutoff valve itself are the usual culprits. A saddle valve that’s damp at the pipe is telling you exactly what’s wrong.
- Feel the line for kinks or scale. A brittle, cracked plastic line or a fitting crusted with white mineral buildup is on borrowed time even if it isn’t leaking hard yet.
If the leak is a loose compression nut you can snug up a quarter turn and it stops and stays dry, you may have solved it. Anything more — a cracked line, a leaking saddle valve, a fitting that won’t seal, or water you can’t trace — is the point to bring in a plumber.

Shutting off the water, drying the area, and tightening an obvious loose fitting are all reasonable homeowner moves. Replacing the line outright is where it’s worth being honest about the trade-off. The tubing is cheap, but doing it right means killing the correct water source, making clean compression connections that won’t weep later, retiring any saddle valve in favor of a proper quarter-turn stop, and confirming there’s no hidden water already sitting in the floor.
