On a newer unit, that can restore some quiet and efficiency.
Where it gets tricky is on older heaters, which is exactly where the worst buildup lives. By then the sediment has often hardened into a dense, rock-like layer that water alone won’t budge, the drain valve may clog partway through, and in some cases the sediment has actually been sealing a small spot of corrosion — so draining it reveals a leak.
