Why Is One Outlet Dead When the Breaker Isn't Tripped?

First, Rule Out the Easy Stuff

Before assuming anything is broken, walk through the innocent explanations. A surprising number of “dead outlet” calls end here.

Is it a switched outlet? In many living rooms and bedrooms, one outlet — or one half of one outlet — is wired to a wall switch so you can control a lamp from the door. If the outlet only works with a certain switch flipped on, that’s by design, not a fault. Flip every switch in the room and test again. It’s also common for the top half of a receptacle to be always-on while the bottom half is switched, so test both.

Is there a GFCI upstream? This is the single most common cause we find. A ground-fault outlet — the kind with the RESET and TEST buttons, usually in a bathroom, kitchen, garage, patio, or laundry — can protect a whole string of ordinary outlets wired downstream of it. When that GFCI trips, every plain outlet after it goes dead, even in another room. Is anything plugged into a power strip with its own breaker? Sometimes the “outlet” that died is actually a surge strip that tripped its internal reset. Check the strip itself before blaming the wall.

But a dead outlet that is warm to the touch, discolored, or gives off a faint burnt-plastic smell is telling you something urgent: a connection behind that faceplate is arcing and generating heat. If you notice any of those signs, stop using the outlet, don’t plug anything else into that circuit, and get it looked at promptly. Do not pull the outlet apart yourself to investigate — the wires can still be live even when the outlet appears dead, because the fault may be a broken neutral rather than a broken hot.

Replacing that one failed receptacle and moving the wires onto the screw terminals restores the whole run.
