Why Won't My AC Turn Off?

  • A failing or miswired thermostat. If the thermostat’s internal relay sticks, or the low-voltage wiring has shorted, it can keep calling for cooling even after the setpoint is met. Older mechanical thermostats and loose wiring are common offenders.
  • A thermostat reading the wrong temperature. If it’s mounted in a hot spot — direct sun, near a lamp, above a supply vent, on an exterior wall — it may “think” the room is warmer than it is and never feel satisfied. The house gets cold while the thermostat keeps asking for more.
  • A thermostat that lost its programming. After a power blip, a smart or programmable thermostat can revert to a very low default setpoint or a stuck “hold,” quietly commanding nonstop cooling.

When constant running is actually normal

Not every long-running AC is broken — and Oklahoma summers make this genuinely confusing. When it’s 100-plus degrees out and the sun is blasting your roof and windows, a correctly sized, healthy system is supposed to run in long, continuous cycles to hold its ground. That last case — running forever but never cooling well — often means the system is fighting low refrigerant, a dirty coil or filter, or a frozen evaporator coil. It’s working itself to death without results, and running it hard in that state can turn a small repair into a compressor replacement.

What you can safely check yourself

Work through the harmless possibilities first:

  1. Set the fan to AUTO and confirm whether the “running” was just the blower.
  2. Raise the setpoint several degrees. If cooling promptly shuts off, your thermostat is responding correctly and the earlier running was likely heat load or the fan setting.
  3. Change a dirty filter and make sure return and supply vents are open — restricted airflow makes a system run longer and can freeze the coil.
  4. Check the thermostat’s location and program for a stuck hold, a wiped schedule, or a bad mounting spot in the sun.

If, after all that, the outdoor unit still won’t stop and the house is getting uncomfortably cold, it’s reasonable to cut power at the disconnect or breaker to protect the compressor, then get it looked at. A compressor forced to run with no off cycle by a welded contactor is exactly the kind of stress that shortens the life of the priciest part in your system, so this isn’t one to wait out.
